Summary of Seminar
The seminar topic most frequently requested is
that of supporting the consumer iwth dual diagnosis. Whether the individual is
being supported in an employment, residential or social/community setting, the
challenges to support providers is similar. This two part seminar is designed
to address the challenges of diagnosing and treating mental illness in
individuals with developmental disabilities. Depression, anxiety disorders,
paranoia and schizophrenia will be discussed in the first session. The second
session will provide an overview of common psychiatric medications used to
treat these conditions. Additionally, side effects and risks/benefits will be
discussed. Whether a direct support provider, program manager or administrator,
this two part educational workshop will provide valuable information in support
of your consumers.
The speaker, Peggy Szwabo, Ph.D. is a mental health consultant as well as a
private practitioner. She is an Assistant Professor in the Department of
Psychiatry at the St. Louis University School of Medicine. Dr. Szwabo is an
Advanced Nurse Practitioner and licensed clinical social worker. Her practice
includes individuals with developmental disabilities, providing her with direct
experience with the consumers that we support.
